It is with pleasure that we announce the next sale of Victorian, Pre-Raphaelite & British Impressionist Art which will be held in London on 13 December 2018. The sale comprises a wide selection of drawings, watercolours and oil paintings spanning over a hundred years of British art from 1850 onwards.
The sale is led by a beautiful painting, At the Fountain by John William Godward, which has been rediscovered after more than a century in a private collection in Sweden. It epitomises the languid glamour of Godward’s best work, with carefully rendered textures of soft fabric, cool marble and warm living flesh.
John Atkinson Grimshaw’s career is celebrated in a series of eight paintings which represent the diversity of his talent, from a minutely-studied still-life and a portrait of his children’s governess, to his glorious autumnal landscapes.
Another artist whose work is given special attention in this sale is Laura Knight, the most talented female artist of her generation. The sale includes ten pictures by Knight, including scenes of circus performers and Gypsies, dancers and studio life. The highlight of the group is a large and spectacular oil depicting a scene in the wings of a theatre, Motley being sold at auction for the first time in its history.
If you would like to arrange a time to view pictures prior to the presale exhibition, please do not hesitate to contact a member of the department.
