Description

  • 257 by 232 mm.

Condition

Two firing flecks, one on the edge of his right cuff and the other on the fold of her shawl near the moss seat. Very slight surface scratches, one running from left 4.5 cm into centre the other 5.3 cm from right, both only evident in certain lights.

Catalogue Note

Born at Sèvres, Le Guay was the son of the porcelain painter Étienne Henri Le Guay.
He was employed as a painter at both Sèvres and Dihl and Guérhard; a Parisian firm, established in 1781, which enjoyed the protection of the Duc D'Angouleme and was celebrated for its exceedingly high quality.

This fine and large-scale portrait is signed and inscribed: manifre de Dihl & Gand was painted in circa 1801.
