We are delighted to present the first in a series of three single-owner sales devoted to Dr Erika Pohl-Ströher’s (1919-2016) celebrated collection of portrait miniatures.
The Pohl-Ströher collection, considered among the greatest ever assembled, was formed over a period of nearly forty years, between 1978 and 2016.
This period was a golden age for miniature collecting and Dr Pohl-Ströher, the granddaughter of Franz and Marie Ströher, who founded German hair care and cosmetics giant Wella AG, was in the privileged position to be able to take full advantage of all the opportunities that the market presented.
Unlike most museum or private collections that focus on a single school, or era, this collection is remarkable in its scope. Dr Erika Pohl-Ströher was interested in all the major national schools and the collection allows one to travel through 400 years of European history, from the 16th through to the 19th centuries.
This first sale contains masterworks by, amongst many others, Nicholas Hilliard, Isaac Oliver, John Hoskins, Samuel Cooper, Rosalba Carriera, Jean Etienne Liotard, John Smart, Richard Cosway, Francois Dumont , Louis Marie Sicardi, Pierre-Adolphe Hall, Heinrich Friedrich Füger, Jean-Baptiste Jacques Augustin, Jean-Baptiste Isabey and Moritz Michael Daffinger.
