Condition

The illustration of the catalogue is accurate. There are the inevitable dents, marks and scratches due to age and use. As stated in the catalogue, the armchairs have been regilt. There are some chips and rubbed areas to the gilding revealing the white gesso and the red bowl underneath. There is one crack to the right hand side toprail of one backrest and one restoration to the left hand side back of the same backcrest. The tapestries are in good restored condition with the inevitable some minor wears and tears. The pink and red colours of the tapestries are still vivid. Both constructions are firm and sound. Elegant pair of armchairs.

Catalogue Note

These armchairs are the work of Jean-Baptiste Tilliard (1686-1766) or that of his son Jean-Baptiste Tilliard II ((1723-1798), maître in 1752, who worked with his father between 1752 et 1766. When his father died, he took over the workshop. As both used the same stamp, it is difficult to ascertain the authorship of these armchairs as they date from the period when both worked together.
