Designed as a crescent moon, set with cushion-shaped sapphires and diamonds, brooch fitting detachable, converting to a hair ornament with a tortoiseshell comb fitting, French assay and maker's marks, fitted monogrammed case.

Condition

Accompanied by report no. 14959 from the Gem and Pearl Laboratory, stating that the four sapphires show no evidence of heat treatment, origin opinion Sri Lanka (Ceylon). Brooch fitting with French assay mark for 18 carat gold and French maker's mark L S with handled urn, French assay mark for mixed gold/silver to one end of brooch. Sapphires light to mid blue, transparent, with minor typical inclusions and colour zoning visible under magnification, some inclusions surface-reaching, some areas of light chipping and wear to facet edges. Largest sapphire stated in report to measure approximately 9.3 x 6.8 x 4.9mm, calculated to weigh approximately 2.50 carats. Diamonds bright and lively, estimated total diamond weight approximately 3.50 - 4.50 carats, mixed colour and clarity grades. Brooch fitting in good working order, closing securely. Tortoiseshell comb fitting chipped, possibly with central tooth deficient. Fitting at top with screw thread stripped and hinge soldered solid. Length of brooch approximately 130mm, comb fitting approximately 112mm not including top fitting. Scratches to surfaces consistent with age and wear. Slight warping to reverse of brooch at screw fitting for comb. Gross weight of brooch and brooch fitting approximately 19 grams. In good condition. Box with Monogram Q N with crown, possibly for a French Marquis. Interior of box stamped Fontenay Smets Succr.
