Literature

Alastair Duncan, Tiffany Lamps and Metalware, Woodbridge, Suffolk, 2007, p. 454 (for related examples)

Condition

Overall very good condition. The bronze surfaces with scattered surface scratches, abrasions, some minor rubbing, surface soiling and with areas of oxidation throughout and to the recessed contours of the design consistent with age and use. The crossbar support with a slight bow. The right diagonal leg of the andiron pictured on the left in the catalogue illustration with a small hole on the back edge measuring approximately 1/8 inch wide, likely a casting flaw inherent in the making. The various components of each andiron are slightly loose but stable and could likely be tightened. The back iron stretchers with wear and corrosion consistent with age and use. A highly sculptural and artistic pair of andirons with masterfully executed details. The andirons present with great visual and sculptural presence.

Catalogue Note

Few Tiffany andirons have survived because of the very nature of their utilitarian function.  The present lot is rarer still in that it retains its original crossbar.
