The present work depicting a reclining female nude ties in with depictions of Venus, goddess of traditional love, which were popular at the turn of the last century. The pose is reminiscent of Giorgione, the two-part background with drapery as well as a view across a palace into a Mediterranean landscape of Titian, the posture of Goya and the goddess holding an apple in her left hand, of Canova. However, the synthesis of the motifs of reclining nude and self-contemplation in a mirror is to be considered quite exceptional. The mirror’s connotation as an attribute is that of a vanitas symbol, reminding us of the terrestrial transience of female beauty, which Venus eternal herself indeed does not have to fear.  

Gottardo Segantini knüpft seinen liegenden Frauenakt motivisch an eine Jahrhundertwende währende Tradition der Venus-Darstellung an. Von Giorgione rührt die Pose, von Tizian der zweiteilige Hintergrund mit Draperie und Blick aus dem Palast in die südländische Ferne, von Goya die Körperhaltung und von Canova der Apfel in der linken Hand der Liebesgöttin. Als ungewöhnlich darf die Verbindung dieses Genres des liegenden Aktes mit dem Motiv der Spiegel-Betrachtung bezeichnet werden. Denn das Spiegel-Attribut ist als Vanitassymbol tradiert und ruft die irdische Vergänglichkeit weiblicher Schönheit in Erinnerung, was die Venus eterna ihrerseits allerdings nicht zu befürchten hat.
