Catalogue Note

The aesthetic goal of his work is the perceptive visualization of infinite time at the level of infinite spatiality. With a totally essential language endowed with poetic and physical tension, embodying the substantial novelty of an art in which the semantic value of language is the assurance of an advanced awareness of the aesthetic-artistic process capable of preventing revivals and “comebacks”, Castellani was in step with the work of artists who in Italy, Europe and elsewhere were turned in not only to the new wavelengths of sensitivity but also to the critical consciousness of where art was going.
Castellani's work finds a reciprocal echo in counterpoint music, where the harmonic rules and registers, extendible to a vast number of variations, can't be interrupted, because structurally conceived and aimed at infinite change. What Bach was to counterpoint and the fugue is what Castellani is to an “arrangement” of the surface of painting with a concrete spatial and luminous rhythm, balanced relationship and tensions capable of opening up to the complex feeling of time.
