Catalogue Note

With its passe-partout matting linked to Pierre de la Mésangère and its presence in England during the 20th century, this portrait of one of the courtesans for the Duke of Orléans wearing a Saint-Cloud Château uniform probably participated in the Grand Tour to Scotland made by Carmontelle drawings from the artist's own collection.
With their collective provenances, establishing at which moment Carmontelle's drawings left the larger series remains an entertaining and challenging game.
The sitter is somewhat hard to place with certainty.  The English gallery that exhibited the drawing in 1999 proposed that he might have been one of the Jacobite aristocrats hostile to the new Hanoverian King of England George II, who sought refuge with the Orléans family, who welcomed ideas similar to his own.
Portrayed by Carmontelle by a country trail on an à la reine armchair taken out into the garden on a beautiful day, the exile seems, all the same, perfectly at ease within his adoptive family.
