This splendid collection, assembled over several decades and displayed in an elegant apartment on the Rive Gauche was characterised by many refined works. This included a pair of Louis XVI gilt-bronze wall-lights with young fauns, which garnered the highest price of the sale: €331,500 (lot 89).
Further highlights included numerous mounted porcelains, such as a pair of gilt-bronze Chinese celadon longevity peaches, which at €85,000 doubled its high estimate (lot 44); and a large gilt-bronze mounted Chinese blue powder porcelain, which sold for €162,500 (lot 71).
The collection also included a fine group of delicately shaded watercolours by Carmontelle, consisting of portraits and panoramic landscapes. The 14 lots for sale all found buyers, making a total of €441,000. The two most sought-after were a portrait of Madame de Lacombe jouant au trou-madame avec son fils, which sold for €81,250 (lot 37), and a self-portrait of the artist, which achieved €75,000 (lot 16).
On September 14th, Sotheby's Paris will present a collection displaying a timeless elegance. Assembled over several decades by a Collector who was guided by her husband, the expert Jean-Pierre Dillée, refined works of art were chosen with discernment and patience and artefact was preferred above ostentation. Her interiors exuded an intimate and comfortable ambience, where subtle, harmonious colours, in particular a delicate green, naturally responded to the luxuriant garden from which the dome of the Invalides could be admired.
Amongst the highlights are French 18th century drawings, Carmontelle’s watercolour portraits, with their delicate hues and gilt-bronze mounted furniture and porcelain such as a very rare set of green Sèvres vases and a pair of gilt-bronze mounted Chinese celadon longevity peaches, with mounts typical of the ‘goût à la grecque’ of the late 1770’s. Furthermore, a pair of chenets from Versailles and a pair of wall lights, formerly belonging to King Louis XVI, at the Château de Compiègne, demonstrate the meticulous choices guided by prestigious provenances.
