Catalogue Note

The carriage is pulled by six horses and escorted by grey mousquetaires. In the foreground, a couple of figures by the canal evoke the picture by Antoine Watteau, Embarquement pour Cythère, which their costumes recall as well. Lami executed several views of Versailles with courtesans in Louis XV costumes. In 1867, the artist depicted another watercolor with the same subject (Lemoisne, 1914, op. cit. n°1267).

We would like to thank Caroline Imbert for kindly authenticating this work which will be included in the catalogue raisonné in preparation.
