Collection of the artist before 1807 ;
Acquired by Richard de Lédans outside the sale after the death of Carmontelle on the 17 April 1807, part of the group "750 portraits en pied" ;
Collection Pierre de la Mésangère (1761-1831) after 1816 and still on its mount ; 
His sale 18 July 1832, n° 304 " collection composée de cinq cent vingt portraits dessinés et gouachés par Carmontelle" ; 
Collection Major James Duff of Drummuir (Scotland) before 1877 ;

Catalogue Note

Our sitter is Louis-Anne Marie Baron de Talleyrand, uncle of the famous Prince of Talleyrand to whom the soldier de Lédans attempted to sell drawings by Carmontelle.  Concerning Louis-Anne de Talleyrand he was Camp Marshall in 1781 and Ambassador to Naples in 1788, he died during the first year of the French Revolution in 1789.
