Condition
The canvas is not lined, with a nice impasto notably to the white pigment. There are some very fine webs of stable craquellure throughout the composition. There is some slight frame abrasion in areas at the extreme edges. Under UV light, there are some remains of an old varnish, some very fine touches in minor areas at the extreme edges to the above mentioned frame abrasion and two small spots of retouching approx. 1 cm above the head of the figure on the right. This work is in very good original condition.

Catalogue Note
Reconnu pour sa satire des mœurs bourgeoises mais surtout comme précurseur du réalisme en peinture, Honore Daumier commente bien souvent dans ses œuvres la vie sociale et politique de la France du XIXème siècle. Baudelaire le considérait à juste titre comme l’un des hommes les plus importants de la caricature, mais aussi de la peinture moderne. C’est effectivement l’un des premiers peintres à s’emparer des sujets réalistes de la vie quotidienne à Paris : les labeurs des classes populaires, les fait divers, les couloirs de l’Hôtel Drouot et du Palais de Justice, mais aussi beaucoup d’œuvres dévouées a des sujets plus intimes tels que la lecture ou les joueurs d’échecs et de dames.
Ce tableau, en excellent état et inédit aux enchères, est un exemple accompli de l’art de Daumier de saisir un sujet modeste du quotidien pour dépasser la simple peinture de genre et atteindre un sujet monumental et universel.
