Condition

Overall very good condition with no damage or restoration detected. The portrait murrine does not appear to represent the entire portrait bust of Paul Goldini, the top of the subjects head appears to recede at the top of the murrine – however in our opinion it does not appear that the murrine has been reduced. Please note that the color in the printed catalogue is not accurate to reality. In reality the ground color of the vase is a deep eggplant, and the outer edge of the portrait murrine is vivid/cool mid-blue, not the washed out pale blue shown in the catalogue. The interior of the vase is an opaque milky white.
In response to your inquiry, we are pleased to provide you with a general report of the condition of the property described above. Since we are not professional conservators or restorers, we urge you to consult with a restorer or conservator of your choice who will be better able to provide a detailed, professional report. Prospective buyers should inspect each lot to satisfy themselves as to condition and must understand that any statement made by Sotheby's is merely a subjective qualified opinion.
NOTWITHSTANDING THIS REPORT OR ANY DISCUSSIONS CONCERNING CONDITION OF A LOT, ALL LOTS ARE OFFERED AND SOLD "AS IS" IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE CONDITIONS OF SALE PRINTED IN THE CATALOGUE.

Catalogue Note

The present lot is part of a series of cased lattimo and opaque glass works, with aventurine murrines. This rare example includes a single murrine with the portrait of eighteenth century Venetian playwrite, Carlo Goldoni.

Giuseppe Barovier made very few portrait murrines. The only recorded examples are those of Giuseppe Garibaldi, a character from the Commedia dell’Arte, executed circa 1915. This scarce example of the Barovier's portrait murrine was probably made for family use.
