Sotheby’s is delighted to announce the landmark sale A FOCUSED OBSESSION, Modern Italian Glass: The Martin Cohen Collection.
Assembled over the past four decades by esteemed New York collector Martin Cohen, this encyclopedic collection showcases some of the most important treasures of 20th century Italian glass in private hands today, from the Ercole Barovier’s sublime Mosaico vase, circa 1924-1925, to exceptional examples of Carlo Scarpa’s coveted Sommersi and Bollicine series, to Thomas Stearns transcendent masterpiece, Facades of Venice, 1962.
The Cohen Collection represents the full artistic and historic legacy of the most iconic glass designers and furnaces of the 20th century, demonstrating their unique mastery of color and technique in exquisite form. Key figures include Artisti Barovier, Vittorio Zecchin, Napoleone Martinuzzi, Paolo Venini, Fulvio Bianconi, Archimede Seguso, Dino Martens, and Eugene Berman. Other highlights include two rare obelisk sculptures by Russian émigré surrealist artist Eugene Berman, one of which was previously in the collection of photographer Robert Mapplethorpe, a selection of extraordinary, avant-garde vessels by Paolo Venini in the highly intricate Mezzaluna Zolfo Murrine, filigrana and zanfirico techniques, as well as and exceptional works by Archimede Seguso including outstanding examples from his pioneering Merletto and Fantasia series.
