Carlo Scarpa
A RARE "SOFFIATO" PITCHER
with acid stamp MVM/Cappellin/Murano blown and applied glass, the body of elongated triangular form 16 1/4 in. (41 cm) high circa 1928 produced by M.V.M. Cappellin, Italy
Overall condition very good, with the exception of several very minor shallow surface abrasions to the surfaces and extremities commensurate with age and use. There is some light liquid residue to the interior of the pitcher. The applied pasta glass lip and handle remain in excellent condition with no restoration or losses. Please note that the color in the catalogue is not accurate. The applied handle and lip in reality are very slightly pinkish red, not the purple red depicted in the photograph. In addition the body of the vase in reality has a very pale grape tone, not the purple pink depicted. Overall this represents a rare opportunity to acquire a scarce model by one of the greatest Italian glass designers' of the 20th century. The pitcher exhibits impressive scale and form, which cannot be fully appreciated from the catalogue photograph. The dynamic three sided/triangular form also cannot be fully appreciated without viewing the work in 3D. In response to your inquiry, we are pleased to provide you with a general report of the condition of the property described above. Since we are not professional conservators or restorers, we urge you to consult with a restorer or conservator of your choice who will be better able to provide a detailed, professional report. Prospective buyers should inspect each lot to satisfy themselves as to condition and must understand that any statement made by Sotheby's is merely a subjective qualified opinion. NOTWITHSTANDING THIS REPORT OR ANY DISCUSSIONS CONCERNING CONDITION OF A LOT, ALL LOTS ARE OFFERED AND SOLD "AS IS" IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE CONDITIONS OF SALE PRINTED IN THE CATALOGUE.
