Condition

The following condition report has been provided by Simon Parkes of Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc. 502 East 74th St. New York, NY 212-734-3920, simonparkes@msn.com, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's. This work is actually in very good condition. The canvas has not been lined. It has relaxed quite noticeably, but it probably does not need to be lined in order to be presentable. The painting is very dirty. The girl on the right by the birch tree has developed some thinness in her face, but the remainder of the picture is in beautiful condition. The artist presumably changed his mind about the position of some of the gravestones. In the center of the picture, there is a gravestone that was either intended to be in the picture and was subsequently removed by a later restorer or is a pentiment that re-emerged and has been heavily re-painted. This goes from the old man’s elbow down to the flat stone in the lower center. There is another pentiment of a gravestone to the left of and around the base of the birch tree in the lower right, and another one in the far center of the far right to the right of the little girl in the straw hat. Clearly the artist changed his mind on numerous occasions about the position of these gravestones. It would not be surprising if perhaps one or two of these had been removed by a restorer, rather than the artist.
In response to your inquiry, we are pleased to provide you with a general report of the condition of the property described above. Since we are not professional conservators or restorers, we urge you to consult with a restorer or conservator of your choice who will be better able to provide a detailed, professional report. Prospective buyers should inspect each lot to satisfy themselves as to condition and must understand that any statement made by Sotheby's is merely a subjective qualified opinion.
NOTWITHSTANDING THIS REPORT OR ANY DISCUSSIONS CONCERNING CONDITION OF A LOT, ALL LOTS ARE OFFERED AND SOLD "AS IS" IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE CONDITIONS OF SALE PRINTED IN THE CATALOGUE.
