Catalogue Note
Not much is known about the early career of Henri Gervex, but his submission to the 1874 Salon, Satyre jouant avec une bacchante (1874, Musée d'Orsay, Paris) garnered him a great deal of accolades. The painting was acquired by Napoleon III, and resulted in Gervex receiving numerous commissions for smaller renderings of this subject, resulting in paintings such as the present work (Henri Gervex, exh. cat. 1993, p. 90). In Edmund Picard's sale of 1904, Satyre et Baccante was featured among other mythological and symbolist works by aritsts such as Odilon Redon, Fernand Khnopff and Félicien Rops.
