Catalogue Note

Joseph François Nollekens was the father of the English sculptor Joseph Nollekens. The younger Nollekens noted that his father had been a pupil of Watteau.1 In the present work, Nollekens emulates the subject matter which Watteau and his French contemporaries favored.
