Provenance

Mr. Wilson, Manager of the East of England Bank at Norwich, 1865;
From whose sale purchased by Mr. Nix;

Anonymous sale, New York, Christie's, 29 January 1998, lot 220;
There purchased by the present owner.

Condition

Oil on copper. The copper has been backed by wood and is relatively flat. The surface is slightly thin in places, such as the putti at left, but areas remain strong such as the sky at upper right. Under UV light, there does appear to be some minor strengthening to the coach at upper left. Minor dots of inpainting scattered around the extreme edges and some scattered pinpoint dots and dashes in the figures. Potential older areas of inpaint fluoresce throughout the woods at lower left and dashes are apparent scattered in the sky at right and in the drapery below Adonis' spear.
