Description

  • Simon Pietersz. Verelst
  • Roses, Tulips, Hydrangea and Other Flowers in an Urn with Butterflies
  • oil on canvas, oval, unframed
  • 33 3/8 by 27 7/8 in.; 84.7 by 71 cm.

Condition

Oil on canvas, unframed. The work has an older lining. The work may have been cut into its current shape, as the roses at bottom are cut off. The varnish is matte in the backgrounds. Surface dirt and dust. Under UV light, the varnish fluoresces green and obscures the majority of the canvas, though a few dashes of inpaint are visible scattered in the flowers. Two vertical lines of retouching on the right and left sides, as well as a horizontal line near the top, support the hypothesis that the present work may once have been rectangular.
