Condition

The following condition report has been provided by Simon Parkes of Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc. 502 East 74th St. New York, NY 212-734-3920, simonparkes@msn.com, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's. This work is in quite good condition. The panel shows an original join running from left to right through the center of the work, which has received a wooden reinforcement on the reverse. This reinforcement needs to be reexamined, as the join is not level and has not been restored. The remainder of the picture above and below the join is in very healthy state. Although the paint layer is very dirty, there does not seem to be any actual damage. If the picture is properly restored, it will change and benefit significantly.
"This lot is offered for sale subject to Sotheby's Conditions of Business, which are available on request and printed in Sotheby's sale catalogues. The independent reports contained in this document are provided for prospective bidders' information only and without warranty by Sotheby's or the Seller."

Catalogue Note

This painting follows the composition of the autograph work by Rembrandt in the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen, Kassel (inv. no. GK 232).
