Condition
The following condition report has been provided by Simon Parkes of Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc. 502 East 74th St. New York, NY 212-734-3920, simonparkes@msn.com, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's.
This work on panel has not been recently cleaned, and it seems that it will respond very well to
restoration. At present, there is no depth to the background or clarity to the figure. It would not be a surprise to find retouches beneath an older varnish once the picture is cleaned. One can see a hint of retouching in the left background extending down into the shoulder, and there seem to be a few along the bottom edge as well. It seems that even if the picture is properly cleaned, there will not be any serious damage revealed, and that the condition is certainly above average.
