Description

  • The Virgin and Child
  • oil on panel, unframed
  • 22 1/4 by 16 1/2 in.; 56.4 by 42 cm.

Condition

Unframed. The panel is beveled on three edges and appears to be made up of 5 boards with a slight vertical bow. There are three vertical splits along the panel joins on the right side with resulting restoration visible on the face under raking light. Overall it presents a bright, crisp image. Inspection under UV reveals retouching to the splits which run through the Madonna's right eye and forehead, Christ's left eye and ear. There is scattered retouching in the flesh tones and background and possible strengthening to the cushions behind. There is a minor along the join, upper right. The painting requires no further restoration and is ready to hang in its current state.
