Description

  • Candleholder in the form of a putto
  • bronze
  • Italian, probably Florence, 16th century

Condition

Overall the condition of the bronze is good with dirt and wear to the surface consistent with age. There are remnants of old black lacquer to the surface throughout, which have worn away in areas, notably to the body. There may have been a lid, given the presence of an inlet to the rim of the urn. There are nicks and scratches to the surface. The underside is uneven and there may be a pin/insert.

Catalogue Note

There is a very similar statuette with a boy holding a vase in the Victoria and Albert Museum, catalogued as Florence, 16th century (inv. no. 4439-1858). Planiscig suggests that another such putto was made in Venice circa 1550 (op. cit., p. 330, fig. 337).
