  • Fragmentary relief of the Nativity
  • terracotta, with traces of polychromy, on a modern painted metal mount

Condition

The group is in a fragmentary state and is missing sections on the lower left, lower edge, and the right side added to several smaller losses including to the proper right hand of Christ, the proper left ear of the donkey and the bull, the bull's horns, and the Virgin's veil. The Child, Virgin, and animals have been separate parts and were recently joined; some joints are visible at the front and the reverse shows modern terracotta filling and metal wires. There are a few stable firing fissures to the surface consistent with material, including to the centre of the reverse and the veil on the proper left side of the Virgin's neck. Otherwise the condition of the group of stable, with remnants of polychromy in the crevices.
