Condition

Overall the condition of the wood is good with minor dirt and wear to the surface consistent with age. The top right corner of the book is reattached and the tips of the proper right little finger and proper left thumb are lost. There are some losses to the terrasse on the left side. The losses appear due to past worming. The polychromy is in good condition with some wear, including general losses and craquelure. Some of the polychromy may have been refreshed. There is stable splitting, notably to the reverse. There are two holes in the top of the head and some small holes in the back.

Catalogue Note

Stylistically this figure relates to the carvings of Hans Klocker and is likely to be by a member of his workshop. Klocker was the most distinguished sculptor in the generation after Michael Pacher in Brixen. The ample cloth of the saint’s robe, rendered in broken folds, revealing little of the figure beneath, and painted in gold, is characteristic of Klocker’s work. See, for example, the figures of Mary and Joseph in the Museum Mittelalterlicher Österreichischer Kunst illustrated by Müller.
