Catalogue Note

Jan Borman is among only a handful of named wood carvers active in Flanders around 1500 and one of fewer still who signed his work. His retables are among the most impressive works of art of his time which is perhaps why he had the privilige to sign these holy objects. The present figure compares well to a figure of the risen Christ in the upper niches of the altar in Güstrow near Rostock. It has the same squat proportions, heavy cloak, and enlarged crown of thorns.
