Catalogue Note
From the early 13th century the enamelling workshops of Limoges began to produce a vessel for storing incense which because of its boat-like shape became known as a navette, from the French word for a small ship. These navettes normally have handles in the form of dragons' heads to protect the contents. A similar navette is in the Musée de Cluny in Paris (inv. no. 11157).
