Description

  • Casket for a scroll or vestments
  • partially gilt and polychromed cuir-bouilli, on a wood core, with iron mounts
  • South French or Spanish, late 14th/ early 15th century

Condition

Given its age and fragility of the material, the casket is in good condition with dirt and wear to the surface consistent with age and handling. The key is lost. The mounts are all intact. However, it is possible that some of them could have been reattached. There is evidence of minor worming to the wood and to the leather, particularly on the back side of the body of the casket. There are fissures to the leather consistent with age, in particular a cluster of fissures around the lock plate and fissures along the back side of the body. There is wear to the polychromy throughout, including rubbing. In a few panels, notably four near the handle of the lid, parts of the architectonic detail have been lost. There is particular wear to the scenes on the right side of the lid. There is a thin canvas lining to the interior which has worn away in areas.

Catalogue Note

Much like the previous lot, the present casket is decorated with amusing polychromed figures from the court and literature. It is distinguished, however, by its great length and the geometric iron mounts typical of ironwork caskets attributed to Spain. See for example the lock plate on the missal box from Catalunya exhibited in Coffres et cassettes. Collections privées, exh. cat. Musée historique, Lausanne, 1996, p. 43, no. 54.
