Condition

Overall the condition of the wood is good with minor dirt and wear to the surface consistent with age. There is stable splitting to the wood consistent with the material. There is a prominent restored split running from the proper left shoulder through the chest, down to the proper right leg and foot. There is some further stable splitting, notably to the legs and the base. The sculpture is composed in sections and stable original joints are visible: at Christ's arms (which are reattached); at the Virgin's proper right arm and proper right thumb. Christ's proper left arm is a little loose. The coronet is carved in sections and joints are slightly visible. Separately carved sections on both the right and left sides at the bottom have been restored. There is non-active worming, particularly at the bottom of the sculpture at the back. The sculpture may have been adorned with glass pastes or jewels originally. There are some old wood plugs in the sides of the sculpture at the bottom and a metal pin in the base. There is a small hole in the upper back. There are a few small losses to the drapery and the tips of three of Christ's proper right fingers are lost. There are some old restored splits and worm holes to the Virgin's face, particularly to the proper left side.
