Catalogue Note

The history of Russian cameo carving began with the Empress Catherine the Great (1729-1796).  The impressive cameo and intaglio collection in the Hermitage was initiated by the Empress not only by buying from contemporary Italian gem cutters and collectors but also by founding the Royal Academy lapidary workshop in St. Petersburg and the state owned stone carving fatories in Siberia and the Urals. Compare the present portrait with the unsigned agate cameo of Emperor Nicholas I in the Staatliche Munzsammlung Munich, illustrated by Tassirani.
