Condition

This work on artist’s board has been mounted onto particle board. The mounting is successful. The panel is flat and seems to be undamaged. There is a vertical scratch that has been restored in the lower left in the center of the wheels of the cart. The work has a matte varnish on the surface presently, which could be removed to provide a livelier surface. Under ultraviolet light, a few marks of what may be retouching can be seen in front of the horse in the lower right. There also seems to be retouching in the black section directly in the center of the picture and in the top of the wheel of the cart. It seems the black colors in the picture have received retouching, and these may be cosmetic and not driven by any actual paint loss. The work could be hung as is, but would improve noticeably if carefully restored. (This condition report has been provided courtesy of Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc.)
