Provenance

Thence by descent to the present owner

Condition

Overall in very good condition. This lamp is being consigned by descendants of the original owner and by all accounts the shade and base have originated together since the period. The shade with approximately 10 cracks to the glass tiles dispersed throughout, and with surface soiling to the recessed contours of the glass and along the contours of the shade leading. The urn-form base was originally designed as on oil lamp, and was later converted in the period to electricity. The riser, sockets and pull chains are period components but not produced by Tiffany Studios. The riser sits slightly askew on the urn-form base. The patinated bronze surfaces display a deep and rich green and russet brown patina, with some occasional surface scratches, abrasions and rubbing consistent with age and gentle use. With a reproduction drop finial displaying a complementary patina to the base. A strong example of this rare Peacock model, displaying a highly artistic and fully saturated glass selection. The shade shows a striking transition from burnt orange to turquoise, and the peacock eyes show a gorgeous range of jewel-tone hues.

Catalogue Note

This “Peacock” lamp is accompanied by a signed affidavit of provenance from the present owner.  This lamp was originally in the possession of Sarah Martin Collins who purchased the piece from the Tiffany showroom near 25th Street in New York.  She vividly recalled the small shop with its three counters on all sides and myriad colored glass all over the floor behind the counters.  The lamp was purchased in approximately 1904 on the occasion of the Collins’ tenth wedding anniversary.
