Catalogue Note

This  painting shows the corner of Brompton Road and Knightsbridge, which has changed enormously but is still much frequented by visitors because of  Harrods department store. The red brick building facing us, which housed the “Scotch House” store, has recently been demolished and rebuilt for Burberry. The buildings to the right were demolished after the Second World War, to be replaced firstly by the Bowater Building in the 1950s, and today by a ‘postmodern’ block of luxury flats The tree survives, but the equestrian statue of Field Marshal Lord Strathnairn by the sculptor Edward Onslow Ford (1852-1901) was moved in 1930 in order to improve the flow of traffic and make way for buses.
