Condition
This painting has recently been lined and stretched onto a new stretcher. The paint layer is clean and has been varnished and very accurately retouched. No further restoration is recommended.
The painting has had an uneven history and prior to its lining it may have been folded or badly rolled. Additionally, some fairly consistent abrasion has taken place throughout the painting. However, the restorations have thoughtfully recreated the simple image and as numerous as they are, the painting looks well and feels natural. This work is offered without a frame.
The following condition report has been provided by Simon Parkes of Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc. 502 East 74th St. New York, NY 212-734-3920, simonparkes@msn.com , an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's.
