Catalogue Note

Charles Émile Jacque was a multi-talented artist who won medals at the Salon in both the etching and painting categories. His career in the Salon, which spanned the period between 1833 and 1870, received the highest recognition possible in 1867 when he was inducted into the Legion d’honneur.  A true renaissance man, Jacque worked closely with Jean-François Millet in Barbizon on the development of a new type of painting producing a very large body of work that has been widely collected.  In spite of this prodigious output, he also found time to be involved with real estate speculation and to pursue an abiding interest in the breeding of poultry that even resulted in the publication of a scholarly tome Le Poullailler, monographie des poules indigènes et exotiques of 1848.
