Description

  • French School, 19th century
  • Portrait of the Artist Joseph Chinard (1756-1813)
  • black chalk with stumping and erasing and touches of brush and black wash, heightened with gum arabic and white, within a black chalk oval
  • sheet: 10 1/8 by 7 7/8 in.; 25.7 by 20 cm.; oval: 8 3/8 by 6 7/8 in.; 21.2 by 17.5 cm.

Condition

Surface in generally good condition aside for a few minor stains throughout the sheet although on the whole these fall outside the black chalk oval frame. There is a small brown stain to the right center of the oval frame and a horizontal crease that passes directly below the sitters right hand. The extremities of the sheet are a little tired and there is a nick to the upper left corner, however this does not detract from the overall appearance of the drawing. The medium is still fresh and vibrant.
