This trompe l'oeil painting is after a terracotta portrait medallion by Joseph Chinard depicting the celebrated beauty, Juliette Récamier (1777-1849). Madame Récamier was painted by Jacques-Louis David and Baron Gérard, among others.  A signed example of the terracotta was sold at Sotheby's, New York on 27 January 2005, lot 11.
