Condition
Panel uncradled. There are some visible old cracks in the panel, but these appear to be stable. The surface is in generally good condition aside from some discolored retouches here and there along aforementioned old cracks, but these are not disturbing. Painting is under a glossy varnish. In the goddess at right (closest to Paris) there has been some paint loss, which is now filled in. U.V. reveals scattered retouchings and reworkings, mostly in the white background. These retouches and reworkings have been applied well, and the painting may be hung in its present state.

Catalogue Note
This type of trompe l'oeil - of antique relief painted en grisaille - was very popular in Europe in the 18th and 19th centuries. One of the most successful proponents of this type of painting was the artist Piat Joseph Sauvage, whose style this work clearly epitomize.
