Follower of Gerard van Spaendonck

Anonymous sale, Hôtel Drouot, Paris, March 19, 1934, lot 57 (as Attributed Cornelis Van Spaendonck);
Acquired from the above sale by the family of the present owner.

The canvas is relined and the surface has been a little pressed. The paint surface is in generally good condition, however is slightly dirty under a discoloured varnish and is a little thin in the browns of the background and ledge. For the most part the flowers are well retained and the painting presents a very decorative image. Under UV, very little fluoresces beside some tiny retouches in the background and ledge.

This work repeats the composition by Gerard van Spaendonck, which was sold in a Galerie Charpentier sale, 11 December 1934, lot 42.¹The dimensions of this canvas follow closely that of Spaendonck's signed and dated (1773) picture, and it may have possibly been executed by one of the numerous highly skilled, albeit anonymous, pupils of Gerard and Cornelis van Spaendonck in the late 18th century.
