Description

  • French School, 18th Century
  • Portrait of Hughes de Balay
  • Extensively inscribed with the sitter's name and history
  • oil on canvas laid down on board
  • 40 1/4 by 30 1/8 in.; 102.2 by 76.5 cm.

Condition

The canvas has been laid down on a board and is stable. The outer edges of the canvas are different in color and texture and are significantly abraded from previous framing. The surface is in generally good condition aside from being slightly dirty and the varnish appears dull and dusty. There is fine craquelure throughout with flaking and associated pinpoint losses, most notable in the area surrounding the figure's head. There are several visible retouches; a thin vertical retouch of approximately 1 inch at the left of the figure's head, 4 circular retouches of approximately 1/2 inch diameter on the figure's right arm and armor, and a circular 1 inch retouch in the lower left corner. Inspection under UV reveals the aforementioned retouches.
