Condition

Both panels are uncradled and beveled on all four sides and both are flat and stable. The surfaces are in good condition, clean and paintings are presentable in their present state. There is excellent retention of the paint surface and lovely detail throughout both compositions. Examination under ultraviolet light reveals just a few minor, scattered retouches to sky in both. No further work is needed and they can be hung as is. In simple brown wood frames.

Catalogue Note

Although principally known for his decorative flower still-lifes, Jan van Os started his painting career with river landscapes such as the present paintings which depict a summer landscape with mother and child walking along a path, and a horse similarly walking beside still water. In both works sailing boats and a rowing boat sit calmly along the shore, as the landscape smoothly recedes into the distance.
