Condition
The following condition report has been provided by Simon Parkes of Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc. 502 East 74th St. New York, NY 212-734-3920, simonparkes@msn.com, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's.
This painting on canvas has an old glue lining. This lining is still reasonably effective. However, there is some instability visible in the lower left, and a fresh lining would address this. The painting is extremely dirty. There have been cleaning tests in two areas —one in the putti in the upper right and another in the head of the bearded male figure on the left side. These tests indicate that although the work is very dirty, it is also quite damaged. It can be assumed that when the picture is cleaned, although the palette and quality will improve greatly, the condition and need for accurate and extensive retouches will become more evident.
