Condition
STRUCTURE
The canvas has been relined.
PAINT SURFACE
The painting appears to be in good overall condition with no apparent damage or loss of paint. The canvas appears to have been recently cleaned and the paint appears to be thin in places as is most noticeable in the delineation of the rigging.
ULTRAVIOLET
Examination under ultraviolet light reveals retouching to the canvas edges of the painting. The sky has minor scattered cosmetic retouchings that extend into the sails of the ship as is most noticeable in the front sail. In the lower sail of the central mast of the main ship there is minor retouching to a small vertical surface scratch. Elsewhere there is some strengthening to the waves and some further retouching to two areas of old repaired damage, the first being in the sea lower left and the second in the sky centre right both measuring approx. 2 in.
FRAME
Held in a gilt wood and plaster frame.
