Catalogue Note
Few shore scenes by Brooking are known and the present picture is closely based on a painting by Willem van de Velde, the Younger (1633-1707), 'A fishing pinck hauled up on a beach near a groyne on the Dutch coast' (Fondation Custodia, Paris) which dates from circa 1673. Another version of this painting of the same size is in the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich.
