Description

  • Giuseppe Zocchi
  • Florence, a view of the Arno towards the bridge of Santa Trinita
  • oil on canvas

Condition

The catalogue illustration is representative. The canvas has an old relining which retains its bounce. The paint surface is secure under a thick yellowed varnish but appears to the naked eye to be in generally good condition with some minor discoloured retouchings. Inspection under UV light reveals some retouchings in the brown tones centre- and lower left but otherwise confirms the generally good condition of the painting. Application of a new varnish would improve the overall tonality. Offered in a carved wooden frame with some knocks and losses.

Catalogue Note

Based on Zocchi's drawing in the Pierpont Morgan Library, New York. The veduta is one of a series of Florentine landmarks recorded by Zocchi which were subsequently engraved and published as Scelta di XXIV vedute...della città di Firenze in 1744. The drawings were given to the Pierpont Morgan Library in 1952 and remain there to this day (see M. Gregori and S. Blasio, Firenze nella pittura e nel disegno dal Trecento al Settecento, Milan 1994, pp. 170, reproduced p. 176, fig. 215).
