Description
- Antoine Pesne
- Portrait of a Lady en source
- signed lower left: Des B...x P
- oil on canvas
Condition
The painting is more strongly defined and darker in tonality than the catalogue illustration would suggest. The canvas is unlined and the paint surface appears to be in fair condition. There is a discoloured varnish and surface dirt overall and the darker pigments in the background and bodice have bitchumised. There is evidence of old retouching in the neck and infilling to craquelure in the décolletage. There are old minor paint losses in the lower right and along a line of abrasion lower left. Inspection under UV light reveals evidence of old retouching and infilling predominantly in the lower half of the painting, as well as to what looks like an old horizontal repaired tear in the centre parallel to the sitter's right hand measuring approx. 4cm. Inspection also confirms the opacity of the varnish which makes further inspection difficult. Offered in an ornate plaster and wood frame in fair condition.
