Description

  • Adrien Manglard
  • A shipwreck in stormy seas
  • oil on canvas
  • 50.2 by 95.3cm.

Provenance

Anonymous sale, New York, Sotheby's, 28 January 1999, lot 478, for $36,000, where acquired by the present owners.

Condition

The canvas has an old relining which is still effective. Some losses and discoloured retouchings can be made out along the lower edge from the stretcher, in the sea centre right, in the sky at centre. Otherwise the paint surface appears to the naked eye in good state. Inspection under UV light confirms the aforementioned retouchings and reveals that large passages are in good original condition. Offered in a carved and gilt wood frame with some losses to the gilding.
