The panel is in good sound condition and the paint surface appears to be in good overall condition with no apparent damage or loss of paint. In a raking light a faint horizontal line is visible running through the sky, which appears to be a slight ripple in the wood, as is consistent with the direction of the grain of the wood, however this does not seem to have affected the paint surface. Again in a raking light there is evidence of minor scattered retouching to old but restored losses in the sky. A varnish and thin spidery craquelure prevail in accordance with the picture's age. Examination under UV light confirms the presence of the varnish which impedes inspection to the darker pigments. It also confirms the retouching to the old minor paint losses while revealing more minor scattered cosmetic retouching concentrated in the sky and along the upper panel edge. UV also reveals what appears to be old retouching to an old diagonal surface scratch measuring approx. 3 in. above the central ship in the middle distance. Otherwise the picture seems to be structurally sound and the painting appears to be in good condition. Offered in a Dutch style varnished wood frame.
